After surprising audiences at St. Ann’s Warehouse, the Bard SummerScape production of Oklahoma!—which brings a tinge of darkness to the musical’s beautiful mornings and sweet, wavin’ wheat—will head to Broadway. Performances will begin March 19, 2019, at the Circle in the Square Theatre, where the Tony-winning revival of Once on This Island is set to play its final performance January 6.
The limited engagement will officially open April 7 and is currently scheduled to run through September 1.
The environmental staging, directed by Daniel Fish, concluded its run at the Brooklyn venue November 11, having premiered at Bard College in 2015. The company included Rebecca Naomi Jones, Mary Testa, Damon Daunno, Patrick Vaill, and Ali Stroker; casting for the Broadway bow will be confirmed at a later date.
The production joins Roundabout Theatre Company’s Kiss Me, Kate as the only other musical revival slated to open on Broadway in the 2018–2019 season.
Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein’s classic 1943 musical was last seen on Broadway in a 2002 production led by Patrick Wilson and Josefina Gabrielle. This will mark the fifth revival.
The production features choreography by John Heginbotham and new music arrangements by Daniel Kluger, performed by a seven-piece band.
